KULAIJAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng's speech at a ceramah here
was interrupted when an inflatable “rocket” banner decorating the stage
area deflated and collapsed.
The incident created slight unrest among the crowd and Lim had to pause
his speech as party members rushed in, holding the decoration up for a
few minutes until it could be restored to its original state.
During the ceramah at Jalan Pasar, here, Lim announced that DAP's Teo
Nie Ching, who had been serving as Serdang MP since 2008, would contest
the Kulaijaya parliamentary seat.
Both Teo and Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua had earlier been
shortlisted for the seat which was held by MCA's Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting.
Teo will now face Kulai MCA division deputy chairman Tay Chin Hein, 45, in the contest.
“This is the first time the party has fielded a female candidate for the parliamentary seat,” said Lim.
On her selection, Batu Pahat-born Teo said that she felt heavy hearted
about leaving Selangor as she had to leave her eight-month-old baby
daughter in her husband's care.
“But it is a challenge for me, personally, to fight, along with party
veteran Lim Kit Siang, to create a political tsunami in the south,” she
said.
Lim also announced that Johor DAP's Socialist Youth (Dapsy) assistant
publicity secretary and progressive social research executive director
Wong Shu Qi, 30, would be the candidate for the Senai state seat. This
means that the outgoing Senai state assemblyman Ong Kow Meng has been
dropped by the party.
Ong was not present at the event.
